Dubai's Royal Family Feud MayRock the Diplomatic Boat
①Dubai's billionaire ruler, Sheikh Mohammed, has worked hard on the kingdom's global reputation. From the outside, it's viewed mostly as an ostentatious, cosmopolitan hub.
②From within his own family, however, allegations are surfacing, accusing the 70-year-old leader of maltreatment of his female relatives.
③The ruler's estranged sixth wife Princess Haya, who has fled to the UK in May, applied to a London court last week for a forced marriage protection order relating to their children. She also requested a non-molestation order protecting her from violence or harassment, intensifying a stand-off inside one of the world's richest and most mysterious monarchies.
④If the Sheikh orders Princess Haya to return, it could be politically awkward for Britain, as the country maintains good diplomatic relations with the United Arab Emirates(UAE).
⑤The Kingdom of Jordan may also find itself caught up in a quandary because Princess Haya is thehalf-sister of Jordan's King Abdullah. Jordan will definitely not want to risk rocking the political boat with the UAE, considering that hundreds of thousands of its citizens are working there and sending remittances back home.
