Abstract

This paper examines again the relationship between mutual fund past performance and fund flow. Using unbalanced panel data of open-end mutual fund during 2005 to 2010, we find that last year return, both the cardinal return and ordinal return, has positive effect on the net flow of mutual funds. Furthermore, we use piecewise regression and dummy variable regression to find that the flow-performance relationship is not linear, but convex. The past star funds can get excess inflows, which means that “Star Effect” still exists in China’s open-end fund market. Besides, we find that category flow, fund size, fund family size and fund manager turnover have significant effect on fund flow.
