[SAEN] 马刺队文班亚马生涯首次入选全明星首发

Spurs’ Wembanyama earns first All-Star start

Victor Wembanyama is headed back to the NBA All-Star game, this time as a starter.

The Spurs star was among 10 players named to start this year’s extravaganza, which is set for Feb. 15 at the Inuit Dome in Los Angeles, the league announced Monday.

The 22-year-old Wembanyama is the first Spurs player selected as an All-Star starter since Kawhi Leonard in 2017.

“For someone to be an All-Star starter — ever — is a major accomplishment and feat,” Spurs coach Mitch Johnson said. “That’s probably years of work and sacrifice, not only from himself but his family, that have led to something like that.”

Joining Wembanyama as Western Conference starters are Denver’s Nikola Jokic, the L.A. Lakers’ Luka Doncic, Oklahoma City’s Shai Gilgeous-Alexander and Golden State’s Stephen Curry.

The Eastern Conference starter pool is comprised of Milwaukee’s Giannis Antetokounmpo, New York’s Jalen Brunson, Detroit’s Cade Cunningham, Philadelphia’s Tyrese Maxey and Boston’s Jaylen Brown.

Seven reserves from each conference, as selected by NBA coaches, will be announced at a later date.

Wembanyama’s teammates were not surprised to hear his name announced Monday.

“I’m not going to lie to you," Spurs guard Dylan Harper said. “We all knew he was going to be an All-Star starter. Just watch him.”

Wembanyama’s selection as a starter was hardly unanimous, however.

Fans voted Portland’s Deni Avdija ahead of Wembanyama in the top 5 of the West. Players voted both Minnesota’s Anthony Edwards and Houston’s Kevin Durant ahead of him.

The fan ballot comprised 50% of a player’s vote score, with media and player votes accounting for 25% apiece.

With all scores tabulated, Wembanyama ended in a tie with Edwards for the final starting spot in the West. The Spurs center won the tie-breaker by virtue of earning a greater share of the fan vote than Edwards.

Despite the narrow balloting, there is little debating what Monday’s announcement means for Wembanyama’s trajectory in the NBA stratosphere.

“It means you have arrived as a player,” Hall of Fame forward Tracy McGrady said on the nationally televised NBC pregame show announcing the starters.

Doncic was the league’s leading vote-getter in the fan balloting, with Antetokounmpo pacing the East.

In another bit of notable All-Star news, Doncic’s Lakers teammate, LeBron James, was not named an All-Star starter for the first time since 2004.

Wembanyama hopes to be starting a streak of his own.

Despite missing 14 games with injuries and playing much of the first half of the season on a minutes restriction, Wembanyama nevertheless became the sixth player in Spurs history to earn an All-Star start. The others are Tim Duncan, David Robinson, George Gervin, Alvin Robertson and Leonard.

“When you talk about where he is at in his career and journey, it makes (Monday) more unique,” Johnson said. "It was a very special moment. … Very humbled to be a part of it with him and cool to see him be able to experience it.”

Heading into Monday’s game against Utah, Wembanyama was averaging 24.5 points, 10.9 rebounds and 2.6 blocks in 28 appearances — despite being limited to 28.8 minutes per contest.

On a per-36 minute basis, Wembanyama is averaging 30.6 points, 13.6 rebounds and 3.3 blocks.

It will mark a second career All-Star nomination for Wembanyama, who was named to last season’s Western Conference player pool as a reserve.

“It just shows how good he is," Harper said. "You’ve got people like LeBron, KD (Durant), all these vets not on it. For him to make it, it just shows his dedication.”

In a tweak new for this season, the All-Star rosters will be split into a “United States vs. The World” format, with two teams featuring U.S.-born players and one featuring those born abroad.

Those three squads will compete in a round-robin style tournament in Los Angeles. As a Frenchman, Wembanyama will compete for “The World.”

Thanks to Wembanyama’s selection, the Spurs have placed at least one player in 43 of 49 All-Star games held since the NBA-ABA merger in 1976. That is tied with the Los Angeles Lakers for most seasons with an All-Star in that span.

Wembanyama was not available for comment before Monday’s 4 p.m. game against Utah at the Frost Bank Center.

Video shared by the team’s social media account chronicled the moment Wembanyama heard his name announced. Upon receiving the news, courtesy of the same NBC broadcast fans watched, Wembanyama smiled and clasped his hands softly together.

He hugged Johnson, standing nearby, and left the room.

There was a reason for Wembanyama’s hasty exit. The announcement came at 1:14.

“We had a 1:15 walk-through on the court,” Johnson said.
