1992年，哥伦比亚电影公司拍摄电影《小人物大英雄》（英文名：Hero），原本制作方希望让玛丽亚·凯莉为本片演唱主题曲，但是由于档期版权等问题，制作公司决定邀请玛丽亚·凯莉的唱片制作人华特亚·凡瑟夫为影片写一首歌，并邀请葛洛丽亚·伊斯特芬演唱。

录制专辑期间华特亚·凡瑟夫向玛丽亚·凯莉提到了这件事，为玛丽亚·凯莉带来了创作灵感，于是花了不到两小时就写下了这首歌。由于当时他们认为歌曲是由葛洛丽亚·伊斯特芬来演唱，因此在风格上就完全没有考虑玛丽亚·凯莉本人的偏好。就在他们完成这首歌时，刚好经过的汤米·摩托拉（玛丽亚·凯莉前夫）听到。汤米·摩托拉随后反对将这首歌交与电影方，坚持玛丽亚·凯莉本人演唱歌曲 [1]。
