迈克尔出身一般，家境贫寒，有九个兄弟姐妹，而黑人当时没有社会地位，经常被白人欺负甚至是毒打，这些经历给他以后的创作提供了很大的思想来源，所以他关心种族与战争，南非的曼德拉总统经常和他讨论种族间团结的问题，他创作出了大量有关世界和平的歌曲，因此两次被提名诺贝尔世界和平奖。
迈克尔没有童年，他的成功很大部分是失去了童年的快乐换来的，这真是个昂贵的代价，小时候没有朋友，没有过过生日，也没有过过圣诞节，四岁就登台唱歌为了家里糊口，经常唱到凌晨三、四点钟，之后捡起地上客人仍给他的小费拿回家交给父亲，父亲看出他最有出息就每天盯着他练舞，也不许他出去玩,只能是跳舞，再跳舞，因为跳舞他经常整夜整夜不可以睡觉，5岁呀！他从来不知道儿童的世界是什么样，也不知道孩子们玩些什么。有一次，他偷偷跑出去玩，结果被父亲发现了，回家就是一顿狠打，他后来回忆说，父亲当时打他用的竟然是电烙铁……不过这种严酷与苛刻给他的舞蹈生涯打下了基础。
他对世界的爱心更加令人尊敬，他是世界上以个人名义捐钱最多的人，这些年，来过他家的孩子至少有百万以上，尤其是身患残疾的儿童。他说要给孩子营造一个美好的世界，他曾经发誓不让一个孩子吃不起饭，治好非洲所有孩子的病，于是他把自己家建成了疗养院，让得病的儿童来这里治疗，他怕孩子丧失信心，就建造了世界上最豪华的病房,病房里有影院,剧场,迪士尼乐园。迈克尔的一位朋友说：“从没有见过一个明星花这么多钱在这上。”
迈克尔在舞台上爆发出的激情令我震撼，他给我带来很大的鼓舞，他的一生一直在给人们展示着奇迹,即使到了生命的最后时分，他也仍是站在舞台上排练。他最后一唱演唱会，仅用了四个钟头就售光了全球50场所有的门票,连贝克汉姆托关系他没卖到……
