Dido was five when she stole her first recorder. This didn't lead to prison, but rather to her entrance one year later to the Guildhall School of Music in London. A bit of a child prodigy, by the time she was 10 she played piano, violin, and the aforementioned recorder.

Her teenage years were an interesting mixture of stealing her brother's record collection (from The Clash to Gregory Isaac's to Duran Duran) and touring the UK with her classical music ensemble and then, at 16, she finally fell in love... with Ella Fitzgerald.

So began a passion that eventually led Dido from listener to participator. She started singing with various bands in and around London, and despite the fact that her brother, Rollo, told her not to give up her day job, she eventually appeared on the debut album of a band that Rollo formed in 1995.

This band was faithless, and they went on to sell in excess of five million records. Over the next two years, Dido toured with faithless (a very different experience from her classical days) and, whenever she was back in London, also recorded demos of her own songs.

On Faithless's current release, Sunday 8pm, Dido appears on two songs, one of which incorporates her own My Lover's Gone. Arista records heard these demos at the beginning of 1997, and Dido was invited to the Dorchester hotel in London to meet Clive Davis. the meeting was successful (Clive even helped out with some of the backing vocals as Dido sung to him).

Miss Armstrong struts on stage as the sun sets on Hylands Park; she's become a diva for the masses, dedicated to the cause.

And as the opening chords play out, it's clear that her music has built her into a superstar, more than prepared to pull out all the stops for such an occasion. The band can all perform, orchestra hits, crazy percussion, and the biggest kick drum we've heard thus far at V2004. But it's the lush synths that prepare us for headliners, Muse and our arms are all above our heads.

This doesn't detract from the fact that every one of Dido's songs is immaculately crafted. And each has been built up into a danceable tune for the festival feel. She promised a fantastic show, and that's exactly what we were given.

Biography

Dido's mother, Claire, is a French poet and her father, William Armstrong Gould,[citation needed] was an Irish lender [citation needed]. Gould, a recovering alcoholic, was Dido's inspiration [citation needed]. Named after the mythical Carthaginian queen, Dido was educated at Thornhill Primary, City of London Girls', and Westminster School. When she was the age of five, she stole a recorder from school. At the age of six, she attended the Guildhall School of Music in London, England. By the time she reached her teens, Dido had learned to play the piano , Recorder and the violin. She learned to play the guitar as an adult, showcasing her skills to audiences during her 2004 Life For Rent tour. Prior to taking up music full-time, she worked as a literary agent, whilst studying a degree course in law at Birkbeck, University of London, which she never completed.

In 1995, Dido began recording demo tracks, put together on a collection entitled Odds & Ends, and sent out by Nettwerk management, who had signed her after being brought to their attention through her collaborations with Faithless (Dido co-wrote and provided vocals for album tracks, such as Flowerstand Man and Hem Of His Garment) the UK dance act spearheaded by her brother, Rollo Armstrong. The collection was sent out by Nettwerk on CD-R acetate in 1995, and featured a mixture of finished productions and demo versions, which she would consider for release on her debut album, released in 1999 as No Angel. Odds & Ends brought her to the attention of Arista Records, who signed her in the USA, striking a deal with her brother's record label, Cheeky Records to co-sign her. Safe Trip Home is the warm, moving and wonderfully musical third album from Dido, the London-born singer-songwriter with the cracked-crystal voice.
