Caterpillars(毛毛虫)are cute. They star in children's books. They turn into pretty butterflies. And now it turns out they may hold the key to solving plastic pollution.
Like many great findings and inventions, the discovery of a caterpillar that eats plastic was made accidentally. Bertocchini, a biologist in Madrid, was cleaning her hobby beehives(蜂箱)and used a plastic shopping bag to collect the caterpillars which eat wax(蜂蜡). When she looked at the bag later, she was surprised to see it was full of holes. She decided to look into this plastic-eating wonders of caterpillars with her team.
They offered a plastic bag from a UK supermarket to a group of 100 wax-eating caterpillars. They began creating holes after 40 minutes; 12 hours later, they had reduced the mass of the bag by 92mg. While there have been other creatures that eat plastics, none of them have been able to do so better than these caterpillars.
"This discovery could be an important tool for helping to cut down the problem of plastic waste and save our oceans and rivers," Bertocchini said. "The caterpillar will be the starting point. Before using this finding in a practical way to solve plastic problems, we need to understand the chemical secrets behind the natural degradation(降解)of plastic. Something in the caterpillar一as well as the caterpillar itself—might play a role".
1. How did Bertocchini find that caterpillars were able to eat plastic?
A.By cleaning her beehives.B.By making holes in a plastic bagC.By doing research with her teammates.D.By putting caterpillars into a plastic bag.2. Which statement is TRUE about the wax-eating caterpillar?
A.Plastic is their favourite food.B.They are only found in beehivesC.They are the best in eating plastic.D.They can eat up a plastic bag in 12 hours.3. The underlined word "
They" in Para 3 refers to _________.
A.wax-eating saterpillarsB.Bertocchini and her teammatesC.plastic bagsD.UK supermarkets4. From the last paragraph, we can know that how the caterpillar breaks down plastic is ________.

文章大意:本文主要讲述了温室效应及其对地球的影响。
【推荐1】Have you noticed these days the temperature is not so normal? The greenhouse effect (温室效应) is one of the reasons.
How does it work?
A greenhouse is a building with glass walls. In the daytime, sunlight shines into the greenhouse and warms the plants and air inside. At nighttime, it’s colder outside, but the greenhouse stays warm inside. That’s because the glass walls of the greenhouse keep the sun’s heat inside.
The greenhouse effect works much the same way on Earth. Greenhouse gases in the air such as CO2 hold heat like the glass walls of a greenhouse. During the day, the sun shines and Earth’s surface warms up in the sunlight. At night, Earth’s surface cools, giving heat back into the air. But some of the heat is kept by the greenhouse gases in the atmosphere. That’s what keeps Earth warm.
How do humans influence the greenhouse effect?
Human activities are changing Earth’s natural greenhouse effect. Burning fuels (燃料) like coal and petrol puts more CO2 into our atmosphere. Too much of these greenhouse gases can cause Earth’s atmosphere to hold more and more heat.
What brings down the greenhouse effect on Earth?
Plants can help a lot. All plants-from big trees to tiny plants in the ocean-take in CO2 and give off O2.
1. What can a greenhouse do?
A.Keep the room bright.B.Keep people warm in winter.C.Keep the temperature warm inside.2. What is CO2 like in Earth’s natural greenhouse effect?
A.The sun.B.The plants.C.The glass walls.3. What do the arrows (箭头) in the 2nd picture show?
A.Sunlight shining.B.Heat coming and going.C.Greenhouse gases leaving.4. According to the passage, how can we deal with the greenhouse effect?
A.By protecting plants in the ocean.B.By recycling as many things as we can.C.By burning fuels such as petrol and coal.5. What’s the purpose of this passage?
A.To call on us to protect Earth.B.To tell us what will happen next.C.To provide information about Earth.阅读理解-单选/选择5题(约280词) | 适中 (0.65)

【推荐3】Cruises are becoming more and more popular, with around 20 million passengers per year now enjoying holidays on board of such ships. More people see a cruise as the perfect way to sit back and do nothing, and enjoy time off work. But what is the effect on the environment of this change?
Although it usually takes less energy for a vehicle (交通工具) to move through water than over land, cruise ships are often large, with the biggest ones carrying up to 6,000 passengers. Moving such large vehicles requires huge engines which burn as much as 300,000 liters of fuel (燃油) a day. One scientific research has shown that cruise ships create as much pollution as 5 million cars going over the same distance. Because they are out at sea, they also burn dirtier fuel that isn't allowed on land. Unluckily, no government has controlled over the amount of air pollution out at sea. Cruises also produce huge amounts of rubbish, and cruise ships aren't usually good at recycling. Waste water from showers and toilets is usually poured directly into the sea—as much per day as from a small town. Waste food from restaurants isn't put into the sea, but still causes problems when brought back to the land.
Cruise ships also cause difficulties in the cities where they stop. Some popular places can get five or six ships per day, with thousands of tourists at a time. Good for restaurants? No. Restaurant owners aren't satisfied that the visitors look around for a few hours and then return to their ship to eat. What's more, the crowds can put off other tourists, who are unhappy that the streets are too busy.
Some towns have said no to cruise ships or put a limit on the number that can stop at the same time. People who care about the environment worry that as the cruise industry continues to grow, so too will the problems for our planet.
